Gems prove unstoppable against Serbia

CHEKHOV (2015 FIBA U19 Women’s World Championship) - Australia made an opening day statement at the 2015 FIBA U19 Women’s World Championship after romping their way to a 105-62 success against Serbia in Group D.

Turning point: Already in the ascendancy and leading by nine points after the first 10 minutes, Australia pushed hard on the accelerator with 33 points during the second period and that meant they were effectively out of sight by half-time.

Stats Don't Lie: The bench points reflected the depth and options available to Australia with 44 points coming from that particular source.

Game Hero: Alanna Smith impressed with 18 points from a classy 7-of-10 floor shooting performance.

The Bottom Line: Having found their way to the podium two years ago, the Gems will be searching for a similar level of success at this edition. While early days and just one game, they look like they have a nice rotation, plenty of athletic ability, size and managed to play an expansive game. The missing Aleksandra Crvendakic has left a gaping hole in Serbia's team and with a young roster, it was a brutal initiation to the competition. Defensively, they were way off the pace and will have to bounce back against Korea who also went into meltdown in their opening outing.
