For Korea, keeping the focus and spirit is the key

WUHAN (2015 FIBA Asia Women's Championship) – Korea haven't had the best of starts in their quest to regain the title they last won at home in 2007, but coach We Sungwoo is not too perturbed about it.

The 12-time titlists dropped both their opening games to traditional rivals defending champions Japan and hosts China – in that order – and the 44-year-old pointed out: "What! We have lost to two of the best teams in the competition."

"What is the important is for us how we finish the tournament," said the Woori Bank play-caller.

"As long as we keep that focus on the right track and keep our spirits up, I think we'll do fine."

Korea, apart from the quest for the top position are also aiming for a sixth straight entry into the final.

"Hang on, we've got three more games to come to make it to the semi-finals. We need to achieve that first. From there it's a matter of how we handle the play-off situations," he said.

We Sungwoo was at the helm of affairs two years ago, when Korea went against all pre-tournament expectations and forced a non-China final for the first time in more than a decade-and-half.

"We kept our focus then. We also kept our spirits up. Like I said, these are the two factors that act crucial as far as our team is concerned.

"In fact, these (the two defeats) have come in handy for us to go back the drawing board and check our strengths and weaknesses.

"We are a team in transition. We have lost many of our stalwarts in recent time. We don't have ready-made replacements for them. Therefore we need to work hard to make this transition."
