Finland's core returns for EuroBasket 2015

HELSINKI (EuroBasket 2015) - Finland head coach Henrik Dettmann on Thursday announced his final 12-strong roster for EuroBasket 2015, one that includes eight players from last year's FIBA Basketball World Cup team.

Point guard Petteri Koponen, now in the eighth year of his senior international career, will lead the Finnish team to their third consecutive EuroBasket tournament.

Wingers Sasu SalinShawn Huff and Mikko Koivisto as well as big men Gerald Lee and Tuukka Kotti have also been included on the EuroBasket 2015 roster.

These five players have, alongside Koponen, played a big role in the most successful stretch in Finnish national team history.

Together with the now retired from international duty veterans Teemu Rannikko and Hanno Mottola, they made up the core of the team which ended a 16-year-wait by securing Finland's return to the EuroBasket tournament in 2011.

This group of players went on to play at EuroBasket 2013 and at the first ever World Cup for the 'Wolfpack', the following year.

Forwards Erik MurphyMatti NuutinenVille Kaunisto and guard Roope Ahonen are four players who joined that core later and will now return to suit up for the national team at EuroBasket 2015.

The 25-year-old Nuutinen made his senior international debut in the Qualifying Round for EuroBasket 2013 and while he was not included on the squad that travelled to Slovenia for the Final Round, he earned a spot on the World Cup roster last year.

Spain 2014 was Murphy's first big tournament with the national team and the former Chicago Bulls forward, who has just signed with Besiktas in Turkey, averaged 6.8 points and 5.4 rebounds.

Kaunisto and Ahonen meanwhile made their senior national team debuts during the qualification campaign for EuroBasket 2013 and the latter was also included on the roster for the tournament in Slovenia, albeit he only played limited minutes.

Finland's EuroBasket 2015 team features two new faces in Jamar Wilson and Joonas Caven.

Wilson is a 31-year-old American-born guard who obtained Finnish nationality earlier this year through his marriage with former Finland international Laura Sario.

The 22-year-old Caven is an exciting prospect who starred for Finland at youth level and was the third-top scorer at the U20 European Championship Division B in 2013, averaging 17.1 points per contest.

"The aim always is to select the best possible team and it is always difficult when a person has to make choices," coach Dettmann commented.

"I thank everybody who has been with the team during preparations and I know that everyone has put in their best effort.

"We have some new players on the team and some degree of generational change is under way.

"In terms of our game plan, I do not see that it will bring big changes.

"As for the experience, it is true that some players already have previous experience in big competitions and in qualifiers."

Finland will play two final warm-up games this weekend at home, both against Ukraine, before departing for Montpellier to embark on their EuroBasket 2015 Group A campaign.

In the French city, Finland will go up against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Poland, Israel, Russia and hosts France.

Finland final roster for EuroBasket 2015: Roope Ahonen, Joonas Caven, Shawn Huff, Ville Kaunisto, Mikko Koivisto, Petteri Koponen, Tuukka Kotti, Gerald Lee, Erik Murphy, Matti Nuutinen, Sasu Salin, Jamar Wilson.
