Field set for FIBA U19 World Championship 2017

CAIRO (FIBA U19 World Championship 2017) - The field is set for the FIBA U19 World Championship 2017 in Cairo with five countries from the FIBA U18 European Championship 2016 securing the final spots.

European U18 champions France will compete next summer at the U19 spectacle in Cairo from 1-9 July along with runners-up Lithuania, third-placed finishers Italy, as well as Germany and Spain.

The event will include three teams from Africa - hosts Egypt, FIBA Africa U18 Championship 2016 champions Angola, who beat Egypt in the final to reach their first U19 event since 2009, and third-placed finishers Mali.

The six-time U19 world champions United States claimed the title at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship 2016. Canada took second place while Brazil finished third and Puerto Rico was the fourth qualifier from FIBA Americas.

Iran won their third FIBA Asia U18 Championship as the host nation this summer with Japan and Korea to join them in Cairo from Asia.

The other team to qualify is New Zealand, who knocked off Australia in the FIBA Oceania U18 Championship 2016 Final. It is the first time that New Zealand qualified for the FIBA U19 World Championship. The Junior Tall Blacks did, however, host the FIBA U19 World Championship 2009.

The draw for the FIBA U19 World Championship 2017 will take place on 11 February.
