MUNICH - The Board of FIBA Europe approved during its session in Munich on Friday the venues for the 2016 FIBA European Youth Championships.

FIBA U20 European Championship will be played in Helsinki, Finland, while the U18 event is bound for Samsun, Turkey and Radom in Poland will host the U16 tournament.

With regards to the women's Division A tournaments, the Portuguese venue of Matosinhos will welcome the FIBA U20 Women's European Championship while Hungary (venue TBC) and Italy (Udine) will play host to the U18 and U16 tournaments respectively.

FIBA Europe's 2015 youth events saw a total of 241 participating teams in 16 men and women's events with all 52 European Federations fielding at least one team - a new record regarding participation numbers for Europe. 

The draw for the 2016 youth championships will take place in Munich on 22 January.

During its session the Board also discussed proposals regarding various youth-related projects:

-It approved an increase of the amount of FIBA Europe's Youth Development Fund to approximately €4 million per year.
-It approved to increase to €7,000 the amount of contribution per team in the youth competitions paid to the national federations.
-It approved an increase for the maximum amount paid for a project brought by a Federation to €40K or maximum 2/3 of the total value of the project.

The Board also discussed recent developments with regards to the future of the men's club competitions.

FIBA Europe President Turgay Demirel seized the opportunity to once again congratulate the four hosts of EuroBasket 2015 - Croatia, France, Germany and Latvia - and express his satisfaction on behalf of the FIBA family about the tournament while reminding all present about the additional expectations that the accomplishment has created.

"That success and the new height we reached at EuroBasket 2015 give us additional responsibility to perform even better in 2017, which is the last event in the current two-year cycle format," he commented.

The FIBA EuroBasket 2017 Host Announcement Ceremony is due to take place in Munich tomorrow, Saturday 12 December.
