European qualifiers an early tune-up for Women's OQT

MADRID (2016 Rio Olympics) - Spain's women have got a lot of work to do before they punch their ticket for the Rio de Janeiro Games.

FranceBelarus and Turkey do, too.

The countries will play at the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament (WOQT) after clinching top five finishes at last year's EuroBasket Women.

Spain got their WOQT place with a heart-stopping, 75-74 win over Montenegro in the Quarter-Finals.

Spain and France are the countries to have applied to host the 12-team WOQT, which will be held 13-19 June.

Five places for the Olympics will be up for grabs at the WOQT.

The players are already on the court with their national teams and getting ready for big games, but not the Olympic qualifiers.

The Spaniards and all of the other teams on the old continent are instead gearing up for EuroBasket Women 2017 qualifying games.

Spain are getting ready for their first European qualifier against Sweden on 21 November in Sodertalje and then four days later, they will be at home to face Finland in Zamora.

On February 24, Spain will host Sweden and then won't play a EuroBasket Women qualifier again until 19 November against Finland in Helsinki.

"We have to start from scratch in a competition in which if you do not do well from day one, it can be decisive," veteran Spain guard Laia Palau said.

Serbia, who have already qualified for the Olympics, and WOQT bound teams France, Belarus and Turkey will all be playing in EuroBasket Women 2017 qualifying games.

While some of the squads will not be at full strength for the EuroBasket Women qualifiers, with injuries, for example, keeping Alba Torrens and Sandrine Gruda away from Spain and France, respectively, plenty of frontline stars will be in competition.

Spain will also have national team assistant coach Victor Lapena at the helm, head coach Lucas Mondelo expected to be in charge for the WOQT.

Mondelo is currently coaching in China.
