Cuba begins title defense with a win; Canada dominates once more on Day 2

EDMONTON (2015 FIBA Americas Women’s Championship)- The second day of the 2015 FIBA Americas Women’s Championship had the hosts Canada adding a win to their now 2-0 undefeated record and ArgentinaVenezuela and Cuba getting their first win of the competition.

The game of the day had the most spectacular performance of the competition so far when Venezuela held on to capture a victory against Virgin Islands by the score of 69–62, with Roselis Silva scoring 31 points, along with 5 steals.

Silva, who now leads the tournament in points with 22.5 points per game, was perfect in the biggest moments for a Venezuelan team that needed a confidence booster after the first day's fourth quarter meltdown against Brazil. They were not going to let it happen twice and Silva was key in the win that now has Venezuela with a 1-1 record after two days of competition.

After having a rest day to open the FIBA Americas Women's Championship, Argentina made a splash with their debut at the continental championship in the Group B match-up against Ecuador. Argentina’s suffocating defense limited the Ecuadorian team to only 11-first-half points. They dominated every aspect of the game and were helped by a sharp-shooting exhibition by Debora Gonzalez, who scored 4 three-pointers in the win. The final score was 70-35 for Argentina.

Canada was also dominant on their second appearance at the championship, this time over Chile by a score of 93–36.

Lisa Thomaidis' team dominated from start to finish, with five players scoring in double digits, while shooting 44% from the field. Chile could not compete after losing star player and team captain, Ziomara Morrison early in the first quarter with a back injury. The Chileans will now doubt take full advantage of their day off tomorrow, hoping for the quick recovery of Morrison, who scored an impressive 28 points during their opener victory over the Dominican Republic.

The defending champs of the FIBA Americas Championship were also impressive on the first game of their title defense, dominating Dominican Republic by a score of 83-44. Cuba was able to move the ball with ease in order to find easy baskets in the paint.

That unselfishness paid off in a big way for the MVP of the 2013 edition of championship, Yamara Amargo, who led the offense for Cubans with 25 points.

It was a day off for both Puerto Rico and Brazil.
