Countdown is on to 2014 African Champions Cup for Women

MAPUTO (Africa Champions Cup for Women) - Ferroviario do Maputo is the team to beat in the upcoming FIBA Africa Zone 6 qualifier for the 2014 edition of the Africa Champions Cup for Women (ACCW).

The Mozambicans are not only the hosts of the qualifier tournament that runs from 8 to 15 November in Maputo, but also one of the favourites.

The Mozambican champions who already counted with the services of Rute Muianga and Deolinda Gimo have now been joined by Anabela Cossa, Odelia Mafanela and Deolinda Ngulela, a trio that featured for Mozambique at last month's FIBA World Championship for Women in Turkey.

They joined Ferroviario from 2012 ACCW champions Liga Desportiva de Maputo, a team that closed down earlier this year due to administrative reasons.

Rising star Neyde Ocuane, who led Mozambique to a third-place finish at the 2014 FIBA Africa U18 Championship for Women and was named to the All-Tournament team, is also in Ferroviario's ranks.

Two Angolan teams - Primeiro D'Agosto and Inter Clube de Luanda - and Mozambican side A Politecnica form Ferroviario's main obstacle to the 12-team ACCW taking place in Sfax, Tunisia, from 28 November to 7 December.

Ferroviario will need to finish in top two of the qualifier in order to advance to Sfax and join Nigerian sides Dolphins and First Bank, who finished first and second respectively in Africa Zone 3 qualifier held early this month in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

Kenya's USIU Flames and KPA came in first and second of Zone 5 to earn their spots in FIBA Africa's only women's club competition.

In Zone 4, Cameroon international Gano Jiogap, who was one of revelations of AfroBasket Women 2013, sparked her Cameroonian side INJS club into the Africa elite competition and INSS of the Democratic Republic of Congo has also qualified.
