Cedars concentrate on preparations, not tough group

BEIRUT (2015 FIBA Asia Championship) - There is no need to fret over the challenges ahead for Lebanon's basketball team following the draw for the FIBA Asia Championship.

That is the message from national team coach Veselin Matic, someone who made his mark in the competition in 2009 when he led Iran to the title.

The draw that took place over the weekend left the Cedars in Group D with Qatar, Chinese Taipei and Kazakhstan.

The competition tips off in Changsha, China, 23 September and runs until 3 October.

If they finish in the top three, Lebanon will take on, in one of the two Second Round groups, the three sides that make it out of a Group C that consists of Jordan, China, Korea and Singapore.

The top four sides from the two second round groups will then clinch places in the Quarter-Finals.

Should Lebanon survive and take the third or fourth place in their second-round pool, they are likely to have a very tough opponent in the last eight.

"We really shouldn't care much now about the possibilities, and whom we might face in the Quarter-Finals," Matic said.

I prefer to think game by game and focus on today rather than tomorrow. - Matic

Even so, Matic, who spoke to the Lebanese media about the draw, said: "Our group is very, very hard and complicated.

"We are in a group with four teams that are no pushovers.

"They are renowned teams with a good history.

"All of them managed to make it to the top four once or more before."

Qatar finished third at the 2005 FIBA Asia Championship and qualified for the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Japan while Chinese Taipei stunned China two years ago in Manila and finished fourth.

Kazakhstan were fourth at the 2007 FIBA Asia Championship.

The aim right now for Lebanon is to build on their WABA Championship success and have solid preparations.

"We now have three months left before the tournament," Matic said, "and our focus is on bringing the team together and preparing well."
