Brazil's Teixeira loves lighting up the world stage

ANKARA (FIBA World Championship for Women) - Patricia Teixeira proved the difference-maker for Brazil as they extended their stay at the FIBA World Championship for Women for at least one more day.

The 1.78m guard shot the lights out and went for 27 points to help Brazil grab a first win in Ankara, beating Japan 79-56 to send them crashing out of the tournament.

It proved to be a breakthrough performance on the world stage, as Teixeira had her biggest single game scoring output on senior team duty in what is her first global tournament experience.

"I think it was my best ever game with Brazil," smiled the player who is affectionately nicknamed 'Patty' and carries the moniker on the back of her jersey.

It was a good feeling to be able to help the team. - Teixeira

"A lot of my shots dropped into the basket.

"We knew it was a must-win game for us and I think we did a good job as there was pressure not to go home early.

"The coach reiterated that we had only one option and that was to win."

"Our main objective was to play the kind of defense which did not allow Japan to make any three-point shots and we did this very well."

Teixeira was only integrated into the senior set-up last year, but showed her potential from downtown with similarly impressive shooting at the FIBA World Championship for Women in Xalapa, Mexico.

And, with WNBA star Erika Souza doing some serious damage in the paint, it looks like Brazil may have belatedly found a winning inside-outside combination which could yet propel them to the Quarter-Finals in Istanbul.
