Brady thrives in uptempo style with Bighorns

RENO (NBDL/FIBA Americas Championship) - Canada guard Brady Heslip is hoping that one day soon, he’ll realize his dream of being included on an NBA roster.

If things continue to go as well as they have so far in the National Basketball Development League (NBDL), it's only a matter of time before a team rings the Canadian’s agent and signs him.

Just several months ago, Mexico guard Jorge Gutierrez was in the D-League putting up impressive numbers before he landed a spot on the Brooklyn Nets’ roster.

Considering that Heslip recently had a combined 78 points in back-to-back games for the Reno Bighorns, it does seem a matter of when he joins an NBA club, and not if.

The 1.95m guard connected on 20 shots from the arc in the games.

He made 11 three-balls and scored 40 points in a 152-144 defeat to the Iowa Energy on Friday and a couple of days later had nine three-balls and 38 points in a 127-116 triumph over the Grand Rapids Drive.

Reno, who are coached by David Arsenault, are playing uptempo and trying to score early in the shot clock.

Heslip is finding the style to his liking and is hoping his performances are catching the eye of general managers in the NBA.

"I’m down here for a reason," Heslip said after his scoring burst, "and the reason I’m down here is to get back to where I want to be."

Canada rank No. 1 in terms of countries outside the United States with players in the NBA.

Heslip was among the Minnesota Timberwolves' last cuts before this season.

If the 24-year-old, who played American college basketball for the Baylor Bears, doesn’t know how long it will be before he gets a another chance in the NBA, he understands where his place with Canada’s national team is.

Heslip averaged almost 24mpg for Canada at the 2013 Jenaro "Tuto" Marchand Continental Cup and more than 19mpg at the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship.

This year, though Canada did not play at the FIBA Basketball World Cup, they went on a tour of Europe this summer and squared off against sides that were in the 24-team field in Spain 2014.

Heslip was among their most influential players, leading the Canadians in scoring in narrow losses to World Cup sides Croatia (18pts, 4-5 3ptrs) and Serbia (18pts) and a win over Angola (22pts).

NBA players Cory Joseph (San Antonio), Andrew Nicholson (Orlando) and Robert Sacre (Los Angeles Lakers) were among his teammates.

The native of Burlington, Ontario, has a twitter account @bradyheslip and of late, he’s been retweeting motivational quotes.

One says, "Life is a succession of moments. To live each one to the fullest is to succeed."

Whether it’s been with Baylor, Canada’s national team, Minnesota’s summer league team or the Bighorns, Heslip has lived each of life's moments to the fullest.

He’s no doubt on track to have a successful career.

Heslip will be in action again on Friday night when Reno take on the Bakersfield Jam.
