Asik, Davis in command on opening night

NEW ORLEANS (NBA) - The frontcourt pairing of Turkey's Omer Asik and the USA's Anthony Davis looked every bit as dominating on Tuesday as the New Orleans Pelicans have been hoping it would in a season-opening rout of the Orlando Magic.

The two big men who shone at the FIBA Basketball World Cup ruled the paint as the Pelicans rolled to a 101-84 triumph at the Smoothie King Center in the Big Easy.

There were also wins for the defending champions San Antonio Spurs and Asik's former team, the Houston Rockets, on the first night of the 2014-15 NBA season.

Davis and Asik were impressive as they combined for 40 points, 34 rebounds and 14 blocks.

Davis nearly had a triple double as he finished with 26 points and 17 boards and nine swats.

Asik, who launched his NBA career with the Chicago Bulls before signing with Houston as a free agent, joined the Pelicans this past summer in a trade and opened his account with 14 points, 17 boards and five blocks.

Pelicans coach Monty Williams, an assistant coach for the USA at Spain 2014, got to see Asik in person at the World Cup as the United States squared off against Turkey in Bilbao's Group C on 31 August.

Tuesday's display by the 2.13m Asik left Williams with a look of satisfaction.

"That's what I saw in him when he was in Chicago (2010-2012)," he said.

"He was only playing less than half the game, but when he came into the game their defense went through the roof.

"There were times where he would finish just because he was so good on that end.

"I want him to focus more on finishing around the basket, scoring a little bit."

Asik was a force on offense in the first half against Orlando, making six of his eight shots.

He had 12 points, 11 boards and two blocks at the break.

San Antonio launched their title defense with a 101-100 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

Tony Parker drilled a go-ahead three-pointer with 1:07 left in the contest.

The Frenchman made all four of his three-balls and finished with a team-high 23 points.

Dallas connected on 14 of their 28 attempts from beyond the arc.

Chandler Parsons, one of the final cuts from the USA World Cup squad, front-rimmed a three-pointer at the death for Dallas.

The Los Angeles Lakers endured a nightmare start to the season by losing top draft pick Julius Randle to a broken leg in their 108-90 defeat to Houston.

The former Kentucky star fractured his right tibia in the fourth quarter and had to be stretchered off the court.

"When one guy goes down, somebody else gets an opportunity, you just got to be ready to take advantage of it," said Lakers head coach Byron Scott.

"He's going to be a great player in this league. It's just going make him have to work harder."

The NBA has 12 games on Wednesday night with the top overall pick in the 2014 Draft, Andrew Wiggins, set to make his much anticipated debut for the Minnesota Timberwolves on the road against the Memphis Grizzlies.
