Armesto ready for her return to the world stage

BUENOS AIRES (FIBA U19 Women's World Championship) - Magali Armesto is eager to tread the boards for a second time at the FIBA U19 Women's World Championship while donning her beloved Argentina vest.

Two years ago in Klaipeda, Lithuania the guard was one of the youngest players on the roster and now she is looking forward to playing an expanded role when this year's edition of the tournament gets underway.

I consider myself lucky to have been part of that team and to have shared a place in the side with my sister [Julieta]. - Armesto

"There are good memories and some not so good [of Lithuania] as I had the misfortune of sustaining an injury on the previous U19 tour, which restricted my playing time me a little," reflected Armesto.

"However, the experience was unique because it was my first on the world stage.

"Although we lost some games, I have many fond memories both on and off the court and I could write many, many lines about them.

"For the position I'm taking this time, I aim to lead the team offensively.

"I do not consider myself a leader, but I am aware of the role I have in the team.

"I've personally always liked to help my colleagues either on or off the court - whether giving an indication or an opinion on any game situation.

"The girls listen to me and I also listen to them, which creates trust for me in terms of when to say things and to contribute."

When it comes to that golden thread of chemistry, trust and togetherness - there should be no worries as far as Armesto and her team-mates are concerned.

That is because most of them are currently playing together every single week domestically in the SuperLeague at club level.

Having the U19 side competing in the competition is proving a real boon for the team's development - a fact emphasised by Armesto.

"Yes, it is an incredible opportunity that we have been given," she smiled.

"It is very important that the team reaches the World Championship with a lot of matches played, so that each player can be accommodated in it and we can all find some ways to improve.

Having expectations are the best way to represent the country, so we can leave the Argentina flag flying as high as possible. - Armesto

"We must give the maximum in every game and we have to do a good job defensively."

At all levels, Argentina are engaged in fierce battles to overcome their arch rivals Brazil and to battle with the likes of Canada, for the best possible ranking in the Americas behind the all-conquering USA.

Armesto is adamant that in time, her nation can climb higher and regularly overhaul their main competitors.

"With training, effort and sacrifice, anything is possible," she said.

"Brazil and Canada are two great powers, but I think Argentina is on track."

The passion for her country is palpable and she is also determined to do the utmost to make her nation proud - drawing inspiration from a number of sporting icons.

"I really admire several Argentine athletes such as [Manu] Ginobili, [Luis] Scola and [Lionel] Messi," she revealed.

"They not only stand out as being great players, but they really transmit other values that many others do not - including, humility, fellowship and the desire to always surpass and exceed.

"It actually generates so much pride to be Argentine and they really are an example."

Argentina will play in Group A against Chinese Taipei, Netherlands and hosts, Russia.
