Helter-skelter Euroleague regular season nears its end

KLAIPEDA (Euroleague) - It's been a crazy and at times, frenetic and unpredictable Regular Season in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague.

While heading into Round 9 it's been business as usual for some teams, with CSKA Moscow and FC Barcelona undefeated and Real Madrid, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Olympiacos, Fenerbahce Ulker and Panathinaikos having all punched their tickets to the Top 16, there have been surprises.

A young and enthusiastic Anadolu Efes squad led by coach Dusan Ivkovic, as well as exciting Unicaja Malaga and Crvena Zvezda outfits, have sealed their progression as well with each having two games still to play.

Maybe an even bigger surprise is that Neptunas Klaipeda, in their first-ever participation, sit in fourth place in Group D after clinching a fourth win in nine games on Wednesday night, an 82-72 triumph over a reeling Galatasaray club that lost for the third time in a row.

Without a doubt, the architect of Galatasaray's demise was Deividas Gailius, who poured in 23 points.

The 26-year-old forward hit five of his team's 11 three-pointers on the night, with Neptunas burying  47.8 percent of their attempts.

Galatasaray didn't know what hit them because in the first meeting on 7 November in Istanbul, Neptunas made just 24.1 percent (seven of 29) of their attempts from the arc and Gailius had only 10 points.

Neptunas, however, even in their losses, have shown a lot of fight and their steely sense of purpose could end up allowing them to play Euroleague basketball in January and February.

"This is great," Gailius said. "We want to go to the Top 16 and make history for the city and our club."

Here is the situation.

In Group A, Unics Kazan and Zalgiris (both 4-4) are third and fourth and face each other on Friday.

They have yet to clinch places in the Top 16 because Nizhny Novgorod (3-5) are fifth.

Nizhny are in Istanbul taking on Efes on Friday, while next week the Euroleague rookies are at home to Unics.

Zalgiris, who will clinch a place in the Top 16 with a win on Friday, are at home to Dinamo Sassari (1-7) next week.

In Group B, Alba Berlin are in France on Friday to take on Limoges, a team it walloped 89-66 last month.

With their coach, former Serbia national team point guard Sasa Obradovic, pulling the strings, Alba have been a tough squad to face.

They are 3-5 and will qualify for the Top 16 if they win and Maccabi prevail in Zagreb against Cedevita (2-6).

In Group C, EA7 Emporio Armani are 3-5 and within touching distance of a place in the next round. They will clinch a spot with a win at home over Panathinaikos on Thursday, or if PGE Turow (1-7) fall at FC Bayern Munich (1-7).

In Group D, much has yet to be decided with only Olympiacos and Crvrena Zvezda through to the Top 16.

Laboral Kutxa (4-4) on Friday host Valencia (2-6), a team it lost to earlier in the Regular Season and also at the weekend in the Spanish Liga Endesa.

Laboral would move into the Top 16 with a victory but Valencia would keep their hopes alive with a win.

Both teams, which host plenty of international players, are geared up for the game.

Laboral, also known as Saski Baskonia, are determined to bounce back from their two defeats this season to Valencia.

The club tweeted to its fans that on Friday, "We play for the Top 16 at home against Valencia! Come and give us your support." The club also used the hashtag #Notinmyhouse.
