A first top-flight victory for Andorra since 1996

ANDORRA LA VELLA (Liga Endesa) - The good basketball fans of the Principality of Andorra have had to be patient.

Not since 3 May, 1996, had the team won a game in Spain's top flight, one that came against Grupo AgB Huesca.

On Sunday, 6,742 days later, newly-promoted MoraBanc Andorra edged Laboral Kutxa (Baskonia), 87-85.

Andorra didn't just end a long wait between wins in Spain's top flight on Sunday, but did so in thrilling fashion against a team that had only days before prevailed in a Turkish Airlines Euroleague contest.

In front of 2,850 screaming spectators, and with the score tied at 85, David Navarro hit the winning basket over Davis Bertans with four seconds left to play.

After a timeout, Baskonia inbounded the ball to Thomas Heurtel but Andorra's smothering defense didn't allow France's starting point guard at the FIBA Basketball World Cup any space to launch a shot or pass to a teammate.

Baskonia has been in the headlines before after a clash with Andorra because they were on the wrong end of the scoreline when Andorra first won a game in the ACB for the first time back in 1992, 95-79.

Known as Festina Andorra at the time, the club had some wonderful players like Puerto Rico great Piculin Ortiz.

On Sunday, Thomas Schreiner, Kaloyan Ivanov and Georgios Bogris poured in 14 points apiece for Andorra, with Navarro adding 13 and Shaun Green chipping in 11.

Schreiner, 27, a point guard for Austria's national teama point guard for Austria's national team, was named joined Player of the Week with Unicaja Malaga's Fran Vazquez.

The Andorra hero also had six assists and five steals in the success.

Fans were treated to a three-point shooting display because Andorra were 10 of 25 (40 percent) and Baskonia nine of 18 (50 percent).

Andorra are playing in the Liga Endesa after winning the Adecco Oro earlier this year.
