Morocco to launch national Mini-Basketball programme

IFRANE - The Royal Moroccan Basketball Federation (FRMBB) has teamed up with a number of local partners and international experts to host the first symposium of Mini-Basketball in the country.

The event will run from 20-21 February in Ifrane, and organisers expect a participation of around 200 delegates coming from Europe as well as African countries such as Tunisia, Ivory Coast and Senegal.

Three renowned Mini-Basketball experts - including Italian Maurizio Mondoni, Stanislas Hacquard from France, and Spanish Ramon Jordana - will shed light on the development and future of Mini-Basketball worldwide.

Entitled “Mini-Basketball in Morocco: Reality and prospects,” the symposium will also look to launch the game for 11 year-olds or younger in the North Africa country, who has given signs of basketball talent and potential on the continental stage, although they are yet to win a major trophy.

Abdellatif Hatim, one of the symposium organisers, told FIBA.com: “The symposium will serve as a platform to launch the National Programme of Mini-Basketball in Morocco. It is a global event where several workshops will be organised, and it is intended for coaches, referees and administrators of clubs and leagues.”

Mini-Basketball has caught the attention of fans, players and official, and is seen as the way forward in Morocco.

In a statement the symposium organisation reminded that there will be workshops of study, reflection and discussion: “The Symposium looks to prepare the final draft of the National Programme of Mini-Basketball, which will come into effect at the beginning of the sports season 2016/2017.”

According to FIBA rules, “Mini-Basketball is a game of Basketball for boys and girls. Essentially it is a modification of the adult game that has been adapted to the needs of children. The philosophy is quite simple: do not make children play a game that is not suitable for their physical and mental development, but change the adult game to suit them.”
