Telekom Baskets Bonn and Elan Chalon pass tough tests to stay unbeaten in Second Round

MUNICH (FIBA Europe Cup) - Telekom Baskets Bonn seized control of Group M in the FIBA Europe Cup with a convincing 89-70 win over Vytautas. Kenneth Horton scored 20 points and Joshua Mayo added 17 to help ensure it was the German side which remains the only unbeaten team in the group, and to do so comfortably.

Bonn led virtually from start to finish, establishing its first double-digit lead late in the first quarter when Anthony Dileo’s basket capped a 7-0 spurt to make it 29-19. But after Vytautas hit back to keep it in the low single-digits, it was in the third period that the hosts made their decisive move. It came with a 21-5 run which made it 71-51 when Horton sank a three with 32 seconds left in the period.

Bonn's cause was significantly aided by Ryan Thompson, who had been expected to miss the game with an ankle injury but instead contributed 15 points and seven assists.

"Our focus was on staying perfect in this very competitive group by defending along the perimeter," Thompson said. "Today's win is based on great communication and team defense, where everybody from the point guard to the center stuck to the game plan.

"By taking away many easy shots from Prienu-Birstono we were able to hold them 25 points below their season average."

Meanwhile, Redwell-Gunners got off the mark in the group with a 79-74 victory over winless APOEL Nicosia.

Elan Chalon too strong for Gaziantep

Another battle between previously unbeaten teams ended in rather lop-sided fashion as Elan Chalon comfortably got the better of Gaziantep with a 102-83 victory in Group K.

The battle remained close until late in the first half, when Axel Bouteille appeared to make it a personal mission to haul Elan Chalon clear. He scored all of the hosts' points in a 9-3 spurt to finish the second quarter, and after others chipped in to start the third period, it was Bouteille who split a pair of free throws to make it 50-39. After back-to-back threes from Bouteille and John Roberson made it 60-46 midway through the period, the visitors were never again within single figures.

Bouteille finished with 24 points while Roberson had 18 with 10 rebounds. Cameron Clark and Lance Harris scored 17 each. Davon Jefferson’s 26 points and 13 rebounds were in a losing cause for Gaziantep.

"We played a really good game against a good Turkish team," Bouteille said. "We kept our concentration to the end."
