Italy survive Turkish test

SOPRON (FIBA U18 Women's European Championship 2016) - There were dramatic wins for Italy and Latvia, and crucial victories for Belgium and Hungary, as the last day of Group Phase action sorted out the rankings ahead of the Round of 16.

The first game of the day saw Italy play Turkey, with the winner taking second spot in Group B behind Russia. It turned out to be a thrilling encounter full of twists and turns, but in the end Elisa Pinzan’s tough drive sealed victory for Italy, with Turkey failing to get a good shot off on their final possession.

For the second game in a row, Slovak Republic had free throws in the dying seconds to win the match, this time against Latvia. But Stella Tarkovicova was left heartbroken as both attempts failed to drop, leaving her team suffering a one-point defeat that consigned them to third place in Group A.

Czech Republic secured second place in Group D behind Latvia, pulling away down the stretch to see off the Netherlands. Michaela Krejzova came up big in the fourth quarter, finishing with 19 points overall.

Dorka Kata Juhasz poured in 20 points in the second half as host nation Hungary outlasted Croatia in a tough and tense fourth quarter. Juhasz was ably assisted by a near triple-double from Agnes Torok, who finished with 10 points, 13 boards, 8 assists and 3 blocks.

The victory secured second place in Group D and set up a Round of 16 encounter with Serbia, who were comfortably beaten by Belgium in their decisive match. Laura Henket led Belgium with 20 points.

Spain, Russia and France had already secured top spot in their groups, so they took the chance to look at some different line-ups. Spain were defeated by Lithuania, who claimed their first win of the tournament, while Russia coasted to victory over Israel and France likewise over Slovenia.
