EuroLeague Women Preview: Wednesday 15 February

MUNICH (EuroLeague Women) – It’s the penultimate week of the Regular Season and there are tickets for both the EuroLeague Women and EuroCup Women Quarter-Finals waiting to be punched.

There are seven games to savor on Wednesday, including Mersin entertaining Wisla-Can Pack with both teams in a straight fight for sixth place in Group A which will see one of them jump into the last eight of EuroCup Women.

Having not won any of their first 10 games, Mersin are now looking for their third success in a row and are on a high after a couple of excellent triumphs – including last week’s vital 73-54 comeback victory at CMB Cargo Uni Gyor.

"It was very important game for us, because we had to win to keep our chances alive for EuroCup Women," said Mersin head coach, Ozlem Sencan.

"Fortunately, in the second half we stabilized our defense and we put more pressure on Gyor, which made a difference to us."

Meanwhile star center Gintare Petronyte, who made last week's top performers, reiterated the newfound resilience of her team who have initiated two successful rescue missions to get wins on the board.

She said: "The win at Gyor was not the first game when we had to come back from behind from around 10 points in a game.

"We had to do it against Schio as well and we are very happy that we managed to wins, so we must continue in this way if we want to become even more successful."

As well as the fight for EuroCup Women Quarter-Final places in Group A, fourth place has yet to be secured. That is also a straight battle as well, with Beretta Famila Schio having drawn level on 6-6 with BLMA, who they beat in style last week.

However, with two difficult games remaining, Schio head coach Miguel Mendez appreciates that making it to the EuroLeague Women Quarter-Finals could still prove immensely difficult.

He said: "I was happy for our win against Montpellier, but the road to the Play-Offs is still hard.

"I am proud of my team, but we still have these two games now against Dynamo Kursk and Prague."

Schio also have to pick themselves up after a major setback domestically after losing at home to Fila San Martino last weekend.

In contrast, BLMA will be big favorites to dismiss CMB Cargo Uni Gyor and that will put them on the front foot heading into the last week of action. There is also a big match-up between ZVVZ USK Prague and Fenerbahce, with the visitors stung last weekend by a derby loss to Besiktas.

In Group B, Hatay have kept their dreams alive of moving past the Regular Season – either in this competition, or in EuroCup Women.

They head to Uniqa Sopron in a crunch duel, with the hosts needing to arrest their slump if they want to take sixth place.

Newly crowned Copa De La Reina winners Perfumerias Avenida are just about over the finishing line and into the top four. They currently sit in third, but they will want to make sure by winning at Le Prado against fourth placed Tango Bourges. Finally, ESBVA-LM must avoid a slip-up at bottom placed CCC Polkowice.
