Spanish connection leads a revolution at Uniqa Sopron
SOPRON (EuroLeague Women) – Hungarian champions Uniqa Sopron have gone to work early and confirmed some radical changes for the 2017-18 season after hiring Roberto Iniguez as head coach.
The Spanish play-caller moves from Nadezhda Orenburg, who he unexpectedly took to the Final in 2016, having also reached title games previously at Fenerbahce. Iniquez is also currently in a new role as head coach of Montenegro, who he will lead into next month's FIBA EuroBasket Women Final Round.
The Spanish connection doesn't stop there, since exciting rising star Angela Salvadores moves from Perfumerias Avenida and the Spanish shooting guard is joined by another Salamanca favorite in Jelena Milovanovic.
The forward, who top-scored for Serbia at the Rio Olympics last year and then excelled with Avenida, makes a return to Sopron having played with the Hungarians during many previous campaigns – including a famous run to The Final Four near the start of her career.
Milovanovic will have Serbian company via the incoming arrival of Tina Jovanovic who has starred with Aluinvent Miskolc in recent seasons and therefore knows Hungarian basketball well.
Both players will also link up with their compatriot Aleksandra Crvendakic, who is back on board after a couple of very productive years in Sopron.
The club have also added further muscle to the paint with the acquisition of Brazilian forward Clarissa Dos Santos, who joins via Bourges Basket.
When the new faces are lined up against those who have re-signed including the likes of backcourt duo Zsofia Fegyverneky and Yvonne Turner, the towering Bernadett Hatar and exciting young guns such as Debora Dubei, Sopron fans will be counting down the days until the start of the 2017-18 season.
