All to play for after Round of 16 openers

WASSERBURG (EuroCup Women 2017) - The EuroCup Women Round of 16 tipped off with a quartet of hard fought games, with all eight clubs involved on Wednesday night still firmly in contention heading into the second legs.

TSV 1880 Wasserburg looked like they might inflict a first defeat of the campaign on Spar City Lift Girona, but were eventually outpaced 66-62. Ify Ibekwe secured a fine double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds for the visitors.

"I think it was a tough match," said Spanish national team shooter Leonor Rodriguez, who also fired 15 points.

"They did a really good job and I think they hurt us in the rebounding.

"They are bigger inside and they really wanted to win, so it was a good challenge for us."

Galatasaray also held onto their perfect record as they took a 71-67 triumph at PEAC-Pecs. The Turkish side looked to be in full control, but a late rally by the home side, helped by 17 points from Jessica Kuster, has given them hope for the return game in Istanbul.

"Pecs are a good fighting team and they really play for the full 40 minutes at a high level," conceded Galatasaray center Kristina Vitola.

"We didn't focus enough from the second quarter onwards," she added.

Reyer Venezia also held a big lead against Maccabi Bnot, but had to settle for a 58-52 win after the visitor's new signing Erica Wheeler drained a huge three-pointer with the last shot of the game.

Another debutante also made an impression as Erlana Larkins led her new side Virtus Eirene Ragusa with 15 points as they won 57-53 at Basketball Nymburk. Aleksandra Khomenchuk had a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds in defeat.
