EuroCup Women Qualifiers: Day 2 Review

KELTERN (EuroCup Women 2017) – There was a significant chapter of history written on Thursday night as two rookie entrants took to the court in the first leg of the EuroCup Women 2017 Qualifiers and racked up maiden victories.

There was a standout night for Rutronik Stars Keltern who manged to outlast KP Brno to collect a memorable 69-59 win. It was a great team effort defensively, with Jasmine Thomas the headline maker after amassing 21 points and 12 rebounds. Brno had Reem Hesham Moussa to thank for keeping the tie alive heading into next week’s second leg after she netted 18 points for the visiting Czech side.

While fellow German first-timers Eisvogel USC Freiburg had dreamed of making it a winning debut double, they were eased out 71-64 by the visiting Flammes Carolo Basket. The visitors relied on 25 points from Belgian national team star Kim Mestdagh, with her sister Hanne contributing 13 points and top-scoring for Freiburg.

However, there was history for VBW CEKK Cegled who erupted in the last quarter of their first-ever game to amass a jaw-dropping 39 points in the period as they stormed past Enisey Krasnoyarsk 94-72. There was the rarest of triple-doubles from Maja Skoric as she harvested 14 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. Her accomplishment was arguably more than matched by a wonderful 33 points and 11 rebounds from Nora Nagy-Bujdoso.

YDUBGD have wasted little time in showing whey they are being tipped for success this season after producing a scorching opening salvo against domestic rivals Istanbul Universitesi. They will feel they have one foot in the Regular Season after they completed a tremendous 82-53 home floor success off the back of a powerful effort in the paint. Angelica Robinson led the way with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Finally, there was a one-sided victory for Nantes Reze as they recorded a quick-fire 18-1 start against Amsterdam Angels and continued in a similar vein to ride their way to an 87-66 triumph. Canada's Rio Olympian, Shona Thorburn shone brightly with 23 points for the winning team.
