El Salvador dominant, Costa Rica find winning ways on Day 2

SAN JOSE (COCABA U16 Women's) - El Salvador and Costa Rica won in the second day of competition in the 2016 COCABA U16 Women’s Championship.

El Salvador started the day with a dominating 84-46 victory over Panama. The Salvadorians opened with a strong 27-4  first quarter lead against a Panama squad that had offensive problems throughout the game, ending the day with 41 turnovers. Alexis Rodriguez was the best scorer of the game with 20 points, while adding 6 rebounds and 4 assists in the victory.

In the second game of the day, Costa Rica was able to get their first win of the competiton by defeating Guatemala 54-47. The first quarter was also key for the home team, closing the first ten minutes of play with a 15-8 lead that they were able to maintain for the rest of the game. It was an erratic game for both teams and one in which Costa Rica was able to capitalize with 22 points in the fastbreak against only 15 from the Guatemalans. Maria Castillo was the best for Costa Rica with 17 points and 4 rebounds in the win.

The action of the 2016 COCABA U16 Women’s Championship continues this afternoon when Mexico faces Panama at 1pm, and Guatemala faces El Salvador at 3pm (local time in Costa Rica).

The top two teams of the championship will qualify to the 2017 Centrobasket U17 Women’s Championship, along with the host, the top three teams of 2016 CBC Women’s Championship 2016 and the Champion and runner-up of the previous edition of the Centrobasket U17.
