Rose completes comeback by making USA squad

NEW YORK (FIBA Basketball World Cup) - The United States, after hammering Puerto Rico 112-86 at Madison Square Garden on Friday night for their third friendly victory in as many game, named their squad for the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose capped his comeback from two injury-plagued years to earn a spot on the team for the second time in a row, while late additions Mason Plumlee and Rudy Gay also claimed places on the roster.

Rose sat out Wednesday's 105-62 rout of the Dominican Republic but played 14 minutes against Puerto Rico and had six points and four assists.

Plumlee, who played for USA coach Mike Krzyzewski at Duke University before launching his NBA career with the Brooklyn Nets, started out on the USA Select Team this summer but was then added to the preliminary squad.

Gay, who with Rose was a member of the 2010 FIBA World Championship winning side, wasn't in the preliminary squad but the Americans welcomed him back to the fold after Paul George suffered a broken leg during the USA Basketball Showcase in Las Vegas.

DeMar DeRozan and Andre Drummond, both uncertainties at the beginning of the week, had convincing displays in Wednesday's triumph over the Dominicans, to make the final 12.

Damian Lillard, Kyle Korver, Chandler Parsons and Gordon Hayward failed to make the last cut.

The rest of the team includes Kyrie Irving, Stephen Curry, James Harden, Kenneth Faried, Anthony Davis, DeMarcus Cousins and Klay Thompson.

"Since taking over the USA Basketball men's national team program in 2005, this was without doubt the most difficult selection process we've gone through," said Jerry Colangelo, the national team managing director.

"I can't stress enough the outstanding effort and commitment that has been given by each finalist.

"I also want to make it clear that this is not just about talent - each player is incredibly talented and each player offered us unique skills.

"In the end it was about assembling the best team, selecting guys who we felt would be able to best play the kind of style we envision this team playing."

Krzyzewski echoed Colangelo's thoughts.

"The first thing is we are very pleased with the overall effort of every player who was a part of the process," he said.

"To select 12 was difficult, because our pool is so good.

"As we go forward, we not only go forward as twelve, we go forward as a pool for USA Basketball.

"As a staff we want to thank the players who are not going forward.

"I'm excited about the 12 players selected and feel we have excellent versatility and the makings of a really good defensive team."

Rose has become the feel-good story for the USA.

An important member of the title-winning side four years ago, he followed up that performance with a season in the NBA that earned him the honor as the league's Most Valuable Player.

The past two campaigns for the point guard, however, have been ruined by knee injuries.

After the win over Puerto Rico, Harden spoke about Rose.

"Derrick brings something that we don't have as far as being able to push the ball so fast and get into the paint," he said.

"He made a couple cross-court passes for open threes. He really looked phenomenal."

The United States, despite George's injury and the withdrawal of 2010 FIBA World Championship MVP Kevin Durant, remain favorites to win Group C in Bilbao, Spain, where they will take on Finland, Turkey, the Dominican Republic, Ukraine and New Zealand.

Where the USA may be at a disadvantage will be the experience department in international basketball.

Curry, Gay, Rose (all 2010 FIBA World Championship), Harden and Davis (both 2012 Olympics) are the only squad members to have featured for the USA in major tournaments.

The biggest threats in the 24-team tournament appear to be hosts Spain who, in addition to having home-court advantage also have a deep, experienced squad.

The United States have beaten Spain in the last couple of Olympic Finals but both games were very close.

The FIBA Basketball World Cup tips off on 30 August.
