ANG - Moreira in, Paulo out of Angola's prelim squad

LUANDA (FIBA Basketball World Cup) - Angola head coach Paulo Macedo has named a 15-man preliminary squad for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup with Leonel Paulo as the main omission.

The 28-year-old fractured his right hand last month during the 2014 Final Four opener of the BAI Basket - Angola's national league - between his Petro de Luanda side and city rivals Inter Clube de Luanda.

At the time, and despite the setback, Paulo - who helped Angola win its 11th continental trophy at AfroBasket 2013 - was confident to be fully recovered in time and see his name included in Macedo's plans.

The 1.94m small forward had played in FIBA's flagship event before, at the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey.

Macedo has called up Yanick Moreira, a student/athlete at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in the US collegiate ranks.

This past season, he played 23 games, started 14, averaging 6.0 points and 3.9 rebounds in 14.0 minutes per game.

Although Moreira has represented Angola at youth events, the 22-year-old is yet to make his debut for the senior team, and Macedo seems keen to see what the 2.10m big man has to offer.

He was named to Angola's preliminary squads for the 2012 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament as well as AfroBasket 2013, but pulled out for academic reasons.

From the group of players that restored Angola's continental dominance last summer - after losing to Tunisia in the Final of AfroBasket 2011 - only Paulo and Carlos Almeida, who brought his playing career to an end to focus on his political one, are out.

Angola's World Cup preparations open in mid-June and include a participation in an international tournament in Alexandria, Egypt later this month.

The African champions are expected to hold a training camp in Brazil followed by an appearance in the 2014 Stankovic Cup.

Until all players report to the national team, Macedo will test Silvio Sousa and Alexandre Jungo. Both players helped Angola win the 2013 FIBA Africa U16 Championship for Men and will feature at this summer's FIBA U17 World Championship in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (8-16 August).

Angola's 15-player squad for 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup: Armando Costa, Hermenegildo Santos, Edmir Lucas, Edson Ndoniema, Reggie Moore, Felizardo Ambrósio, Joaquim Gomes, Mutu Fonseca, Islando Manuel, Carlos Morais, Olimpio Cipriano, Eduardo Mingas, Milton Barros, Valdelicio Joaquim and Yanick Moreira.

At Spain 2014, Angola will play in Gran Canaria's Group D along with Mexico, Lithuania, Slovenia, Korea and Australia.
