ANG - Macedo to test rising stars at Egypt warm-up tourney

ALEXANDRIA (FIBA Basketball World Cup) - The time has arrived for two emerging stars from Angola to take the next step up and they are expected to do so in Alexandria, Egypt next week.

The North African country, which sealed one of the three places on offer for African teams for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup, is hosting a warm-up tournament from 21 to 26 June, and Angola head coach Paulo Macedo will be sure to test both Alexandre Jungo and Silvio Sousa.

The pair has been making headlines across the continent for leading Angola to the unexpected title at the 2013 FIBA Africa U16 Championship in Madagascar.

In that tournament, Jungo led Angola in scoring with 17.9 points, while Sousa dominated the paint area with 12.7 rebounds per game.

The pair might not feature for Angola at Spain 2014, but they are likely to represent their country at the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship.

As well as AfroBasket 2013 champions Angola, the Alexandria warm-up tournament will feature the host nation, along with AfroBasket 2011 champions Tunisia, Jordan, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Kuwait.

With Carlos Morais, Olimpio Cipriano, Armando Costa and Eduardo Mingas out of the Alexandria tournament, Jungo and Sounsa have only one thing in mind: to develop their game with Alexandria experience.

"Wearing the colours of my country at senior level has always been a dream of mine, but I never expect to be called up at such a young age. I thank coach Macedo for trusting me and I'll do my best to make him proud of me," said the 2.02m forward Sousa.

As for Egypt, Assem Marei, who played a crucial for the hosts in last summer's African Championship, is going to miss the tournament due to an injury and he might also miss the William Jones Cup in Taipei in July.
