Petrochimi crush ONGC for second win

CHENZHOU (FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2016) – Petrochimi opened Day 2 at the FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2016 in style by crushing ONGC of India, 95-51. The Iranians notched their second win in a row and handed the Indians their first defeat of the tournament.

James White and Gerald Robinson, Jr. did well for Petrochimi again, but it was Mehrad Atashi and Oshin Sahakian who stepped up big time, recording a combined 26 points. ONGC, meanwhile, was paced by the combined 27 points of Vishesh Bhriguvanshi and Amritpal Singh.

Turning Point: Petrochimi were never seriously threatened in this game, leading practically from start to finish. They led by 14 points at the end of the first period and never looked back, completely dominating the outmatched Indians.

Stats Don't Lie: ONGC had good size, but they just didn’t have the depth to match up well with Petrochimi. The Iranians outrebounded the Indians, 56-29, and limited them to 34% field goal shooting. It was as lopsided as it could get in favor of Petrochimi.

Game Hero: Gerald Robinson, Jr. stamped his class and showed his versatility against ONGC. Robinson tallied 14 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals for Petrochimi. He basically did everything and was all over the floor for the top tier Iranian club.

The Bottom Line: Petrochimi were the heavy favorites to win this game, and they did not disappoint, becoming the first club to notch back-to-back wins in the competition. They move up to 2-0, cement their place atop Group A and will take a break on Day 3 before returning to action against dangerous Al Rayyan on Day 4. ONGC, meanwhile, just could not contain the talent of Petrochimi, but they have a chance to bounce back tomorrow against the Qataris of Al Rayyan.
