Micheev powers Barsy Atyrau past Malaysia

CHENZHOU (FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2016) – Kazakhstan’s Barsy Atyrau all but eliminated the Malaysia Dragons from Quarter-Finals contention with big rout, 94-61, on Day 4 of the FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2016 in Chenzhou, China.

Veteran big man Pavel Micheev led the charge for the victorious Kazakhs, who finally nailed a win after losing their first two outings by an average of 33 points. Ibragim Konyssov and Mikhail Yevstigneyev also shone for Barsy Atyrau, contributing 13 and 15 points respectively. The lowly Dragons, meanwhile, had three players in double-figures led by Tian Yuan Kuek’s 15 points.

Turning Point: Barsy led from start to finish in this one, coming out of the gates with a 24-8 lead after the first quarter and never letting up. That difference ballooned to 22 points at the half and was biggest at 38 points in the second half. Malaysia never posed much of a challenge, especially with key players Shee Fai Loh and Joel Wright not playing.

Stats Don't Lie: With Wright not playing, Malaysia was pounded inside the paint hard. The Kazakhs outscored the Dragons, 62-30, in the box and also outrebounded them, 36-30. As if that was not enough, Barsy Atyrau also dominated on defense, recording 16 steals and forcing a total of 29 Malaysian turnovers.

Game Hero: 31-year-old Pavel Micheev turned back the clock and unloaded a heckuva ballgame here. The 2.00m frontliner had his third game in a row where he scored in double-digits, but this one was far better than the first two. Micheev tallied 30 points on 14-of-21 field goal shooting, including sinking three triples. He also hauled down 6 rebounds and dished out 2 assists, spearheading Barsy Atyrau’s relentless attack.

The Bottom Line: This was a clinic staged by the Kazakhs. They knew they had the edge in size and depth against Malaysia, and they exploited it to the hilt. Barsy Atyrau will gun for third seed in Group B against Al Shorta tomorrow, while the Malaysia Dragons are hoping to spring a highly unlikely upset against title favorites China Kashgar.
