Angola, South Africa, hosts Zambia set to battle for place at FIBA AfroBasket 2017

LUSAKA (FIBA AfroBasket 2017) - Zambia may not be a powerhouse in African basketball but they look highly motivated to make history at FIBA Africa Zone 6 Group G qualifier for the FIBA AfroBasket 2017.

Playing as hosts of the regional qualifier from March 25-30, Zambia will take on eleven-time African champions Angola and South Africa in a battle for a ticket on offer for the Final Round of FIBA Africa's flagship tournament in Congo-Brazzaville (19-30 August).

In the opener of the round-robin format tournament, Zambia will take on South Africa on Saturday. A day later South Africa will face Angola.

Although Angola emerge as the strongest team in the qualifier, Zambians remain upbeat.

Zambia's assistant coach Overt Shanboko has reportedly said: "Angola is a good team and that has been dominant in Southern Africa for quite a long time but we are not afraid of them, although we recently met them at club level and lost, we are not scared of them because our team has amazing and fresh talent that has been drafted into the team.”

The team that wins this qualifier will join African champions Nigeria, FIBA AfroBasket 2017 hosts Republic of Congo, Egypt, Uganda, DR Congo and Mozambique.

However, the teams that finish second in Africa Zone 6 groups G and H (Zimbabwe finished runners-up to Mozambique) will have a second chance to advance to Congo-Brazzaville by facing each other.

25 March: Zambia v South Africa
26 March: South Africa v Angola
27 March: Zambia v Angola
